So why now, our story:
From childhood I have battled a weightloss struggle, despite a fitness passion initially inspired by bodybuilding magazines and martial arts inspired by Bruce Lee, yet keeping active ,I yo-yo’d a fluctuating range of average to overweight and never managing to master really getting fit and healthy.
Many years on, finding myself battling depression of an ended long relationship in my thirties and being very overweight, I found a beginner course of walk/running which soon to progressed to an addiction of wanting improvement and then found myself regularly increasing run distances, scrutinising nutrition intake and wanting to learn like a sponge everything I could for personal development, improved health, competitive fitness and seeking wellbeing.
Having met a partner and having children in late thirties and no this is not an excuse, I soon made the mistake of neglecting and not maintaining my health and fitness, no this no longer being a priority, the pounds that increased soon became stones and resulting in being severely obese. My Doctor then dealt me another blow advising I had high blood pressure and confirmed pre-diabetes and commenced a course of medication.
A bout of constant stomach and bowel pain resulted in hospital appointments & scans and confirming diverticulitis
As we age 40+, it becomes harder to train like we used to in in our youth or 20’s and then a return to the gym in a response to try and do something about my deteriorating health, I suddenly experienced a pain in my stomach which soon became a diagnosed large abdominal hernia which demotivated my return to fitness and my health spiraled even further to become someone so limited in body movement, I could no longer tie my shoe laces, struggled to keep pace with my children and buying larger and larger clothing became the norm.
I was then advised by my Doctor in quite a serious tone, the dangers, risks and shortened life expectancy, which I already knew to be honest and was offered a streamlined pathway of bariatric surgery. Having been passionate about health & fitness from an early age, this felt a new low yet I still for some reason could not motivate myself to change. How bad did it need to get before I would change?
In reality, it wasn’t a constant downward spiral, there were attempts and I sometimes had limited success to turning things around, but the end result always was an increased body weight and detriment to my health with age increasing every attempt just got harder and harder.
Throughout my life I had tried so many different diet approaches: Weight Watchers, Slimming World, Beach diet, 5/2 fasting diet, calorie counting to name a few with very limited success. I found calorie counting so tedious yet knew if followed correctly, it would result in success. The truth is many of these work for different people and if you find an approach that works for you, stick with it! If it ain’t broke, don’t try and fix it! as they say….
I was coming round to the point where I started to accept bariatric therapy was going to be needed and even promised my wife that if by April 2025, I was not on the road to weight loss success, I was just going ahead with it.
The end of February 2025, I woke with an epiphany of giving it one more final chance to lose weight, but not only that, scribbling down the approach I would use would be no special diet other than pure goodness consumed and nothing else.
I can’t actually say why it felt different this time, but within a couple of weeks I already knew this is the approach I should of taken many years ago and weight started to come off. Some weeks quite considerably, other weeks only very slight reductions and a couple of weeks even marginally increasing.
Weightloss was just only one of the benefits that was realised, my skin improved, bloating I constantly suffered reduced by more than half and the diverticulitis symptoms reduced by more than 50%.
Still very early on in my journey and knowing I could re-lapse at any time and a struggle that never leaves me, I have now made some considerable weight loss, feel better in myself and now returned to Parkrun and walking, feeling immense benefits.
What really feels different about my approach this time is that I am not restricting myself to a regime or way of eating other than whole fresh good quality food, but also the other factors of social connection with exercise, being honest and open about my journey with people I meet or blog to and is just an example how it is a multi faceted approach that helps you succeed in your wellness journey.
It’s still early days for me, but long may I continue, in the right direction.
This journey through my life gave me a seeking of improvement from my teens of reading men’s bodybuilding & health magazines, to martial arts, running but later more so in the fields of mind psychology and constant never improvement but without the application.
A long time coming and a wish I had found my approach many years earlier, I realise the importance of modelling success, understanding professional guidance and it all starts with the mind readiness, before you are ready to tackle your health, fitness and wellness goals.
The real energy I receive, is when connecting with professionals, that there is so much more that be offered in the reals of natural health and now find myself a desire to never stop learning and growing in this field and a want to help others do the same.
Therefore I am trying to experience every avenue of natural health and wellness solutions and hope to bring professionals on board to not make a difference to just one person or one community, but a resource to all interested in natural health whether a slight interest or a deep intrinsic passion.
